A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's major government projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” affirmed the country's president.
The president reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term concluded the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its duties in public infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, beating predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an prompt pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This pause was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the president insisted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these strategic projects.
